About the Role

GitHub, the world’s leading AI-powered developer platform, is hiring for a Summer 2025 Internship with their Code Scanning team. This unique opportunity is perfect for PhD students passionate about combining artificial intelligence and static code analysis to improve the security and quality of software development at scale.

As an Applied Researcher Intern, you’ll conduct cutting-edge research, develop prototypes, and collaborate with GitHub’s world-class engineering teams. Your work will directly impact products like CodeQL and Copilot Autofix, helping secure millions of open-source and enterprise codebases.


What You’ll Do

  • Collaborate with distributed teams on advanced AI and code analysis research projects.
  • Design, prototype, and evaluate tools for detecting and fixing software vulnerabilities using LLMs.
  • Integrate your work with GitHub’s developer-facing tools like Copilot and CodeQL.
  • Contribute to real-world code scanning solutions used by thousands of developers daily.
  • Publish results and experiment findings that push the boundaries of developer tooling and security.

What We’re Looking For

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science or a related field, with at least one term remaining post-internship.
  • Available full-time for 12 consecutive weeks starting June 2025.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with software development using Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, or similar languages.
  • Background in:
    • Static or dynamic program analysis
    • Software security and vulnerability detection
    • Machine learning applied to source code (especially with LLMs)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Prior experience publishing research or contributing to developer tools.
  • Familiarity with compilers, interpreters, static analyzers, or programming language theory.
  • Experience developing CLIs, IDE extensions, or custom code analysis tools.
